Spinal Cord Stimulation

A NEEDLE TO RELIEF PAIN.

It is one of the pain management therapies. Chronic pain occurs when the pain lasts longer, become harmful and problematic while carrying out life activities. Usually signals are sent to the brain through the nerves so that the brain gets aware that there is something wrong. When these nerves got damaged, they still sometimes sent the message to the brain if there is no injury. Here comes the spinal cord stimulation therapy that disrupts these kinds of signals to reach the brain. Sometimes chronic pain continues even after the initial cause is treated, so SCS is really good to treat these kinds of pain-causing nerves.

WHAT IS SPINAL CORD STIMULATOR ?

It is a small device inserted beneath the skin and sends electric current/pulses to the spinal cord. Pulse generators, a remote to adjust the pulse from the generator, a wire to carry that pulse to the nerves are the essential parts of the device. When the device is turn on, the SCS mask the pain-causing signals to reach the brain by stimulating the nerves in the area where pain occurs. Generators are controlled by a handheld remote to adjust the pulse as per need. The batteries in the generators are either rechargeable or non-rechargeable.

WHO ARE THE CANDIDATES FOR SPINAL CORD STIMULATION?

  1. Patients who were having chronic pain for several months in the legs, arm, and lower back.
  2. Failure of different surgeries to provide relief from the pain.
  3. Have any disease that causes burning pain in feet and arms.
  4. Arachnoiditis patients.
  5. Having other issues like Angina peripheral vascular disease, multiple sclerosis, and spinal cord injury

WHAT HAPPENS BEFORE TREATMEMT?

The doctor will have some presurgical test; will ask about your medical history. You are not allowed to take NSAIDS, Coumadin, or any other blood thinners two weeks before the treatment. You have to stop smoking, chewing, alcohol before the treatment. You are even not allowed to drink or eat anything the night before the treatment.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE TREATMENT?

You will be shifted to the recovery room. Your pain, blood pressure, etc., will be monitored. You will be allowed to go home on the same day or the next morning. The team will adequately check the generator and then discharge you by giving some instructions.

WHAT PRECAUTIONS TO TAKE AFTER GETTING DISCHARGE ?

  • Don’t bend or twist the back till the 6th week from treatment.
  • Don’t lift more massive objects.
  • Don’t drive until allowed.
  • Prohibit alcohol strictly as it thins the blood leading to the chance of bleeding.
  • Before and after cleaning incisions wash hands properly to prevent infection.
  • To reduce pain and swelling in the incisions ice it daily for about 15 minutes.
  • Keep changing your position don’t stick to one place unless sleeping.

WHAT IS THE SUCCESSFUL RESULT ?

You have to visit the surgeon after ten days, your generator / remote will be checked. Your pain specialist will monitor you, and the device representative will adjust the pulse generator rate.
The SCS only stops the impulse hence reducing the pain, so if the result is reduced to half, then the treatment will be considered successful. The good thing is that this SCS technique is reversible you can discontinue it anytime you want.
